Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) describes a problem with how the brain receives and sends information to the rest of the body. It's often helpful to think of your brain as a computer. In someone who has FND, there's no damage to the hardware, or structure, of the brain.
An example of something simple could be your posture. Say you present with your head tilted to one side or the other, other practitioners may look at you and may decide that you have either muscles that are too tight on one side, or too weak on the other. We would point out that nothing happens in your body without the brain telling it to do so. Our first question would be, "Why does your brain think center is there"
Functional neurology uses specific, non-invasive treatment procedures to rehabilitate nerve cells, as well as enhance the performance of the brain and the nervous system. In Functional Neurology, treatment is tailored to your specific needs according to the results of your initial consultation and exam.
We would first perform a comprehensive physical, and neurological examination as part of your initial examination. Should other studies such as labs, radiology, etc., be required, the appropriate referral will be made.
There is an old Chinese saying: The disease (or dysfunction) is unique to the individual, therefore; the treatment is also unique to the individual. That being said, the treatments are completely based upon the patient's unique physical and neurological findings.
There exist a wide variety of methods that can be used by the Functional Neurologist to stimulate your nervous system and improve its function. These may include:
