Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) describes a problem with how the brain receives and sends information to the rest of the body. It's often helpful to think of your brain as a computer. In someone who has FND, there's no damage to the hardware, or structure, of the brain.
Simply put, functional neurology uses specific, non-invasive treatment procedures to rehabilitate nerve cells, as well as enhance the performance of the brain and the nervous system. In Functional Neurology, treatment is tailored to your specific needs according to the results of your initial consultation and exam.
Functional medicine dives deep into other issues that contribute to underlying issues, which contribute to health or disease. These can include things like, hormone imbalance, toxicity, neurotransmitter imbalance, food sensitivities, and much more.
One example of understanding begins with understanding basic lab studies. The ranges used to determine "normal," are a "range of normal." Think about your body temperature. 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit is not "normal," but average. Normal ranges from 97°F (36.1°C) to 99°F (37.2°C) as there are fluctuations in temperature throughout the day, as well as fluctuations based upon your physical activity.
Take this idea and now look at some lab work, and let's use Vitamin D3. Most laboratories consider a "normal range" to be between 30-100, however; we know that once you are below 80, you're expressing a functional deficiency. This early indicator can indicate that you may have difficulty maintaining hormone levels or contribute to imbalances in serum cholesterol.
Cathcing things early and understanding how the body systems work together is necessary in maintain proper health and function because it is all inter-related.
We provide physical, and neurological examination as part of your initial examination. Should other studies such as labs, radiology, etc., be required, the appropriate referral will be made.
There is an old Chinese saying: The disease (or dysfunction) is unique to the individual, therefore; the treatment is also unique to the individual. That being said, the treatments are completely based upon the patient's unique physical and neurological findings.
There exist a wide variety of methods that can be used by the Functional Neurologist to stimulate your nervous system and improve its function.
These may include:
